Blog Writing Tips

Please keep these in mind as you compose your blog postings:

1.            Pick a topic that matters to you – your emotion will pull your readers in and elevate the level of your writing.

2.             Before you start writing, decide what it is that you want to say.   After you have the topic, zero in on your most important ideas.  Finally, play around with the order in which you could present them to find what works best.

3.            Your two strongest sentences should be the first, drawing the reader in and making him want to read more, and your last, leaving the reader with a positive impression and something to think about.

4.            Your style should be conversational, not formal.  Blogs are considered a back-and-forth conversation.  This will give readers the sense that you are reaching out to them and make it more likely that they will reply.

5.            BUT this doesn’t mean you should not use proper grammar and spelling cuz that just makes you look dumbb.  According to “9 Grammar Rules Every Blogger Needs to Know”, some the most frequent mistakes made by bloggers are:  mixing up who and whom; not using “however” correctly (at the beginning of a sentence followed by a comma); mistaking lie, lay, lain, laid, and lying; making mistakes with commas; and using too many sentence fragments.  ALWAYS proofread!

6.            Support your points.  Don’t just throw out a theory or idea – back it up with specific examples, analogies, or quotes from an expert in the field. If you are putting forth an argument, take time to look at the other side, if only to break it down.

7.            Keep it relatively short – a paragraph or two will generally do the trick (except for the lit. letters).  People scanning the Internet are less likely to read lengthy posts.
